Piramal Foundation Wraps up its First Summer Camp

Summer Camp 2008

Although school was out for summer holidays, the campus of Seth Piramal Boys Senior Secondary School was buzzing with activity. For a month, 28 students from Bagar and surrounding towns studied English, computers and leadership. They covered issues such as career guidance, team work, personal responsibility and anger management.

“It was a very enriching experience,” camp coordinator Preeti Balakrishnan said. Classes were conducted by students from BITS-Pilani and other visiting interns working at the Grassroots Development Lab as well as community leaders.

The most remarkable aspect of the camp is that the attendees willingly spent long hours of their summer vacation to develop their leadership, language, and computer skills. Camp was held from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. On Saturdays, the camp staff screened films from which students could take away a life lesson.  Lakhsya's theme was about goal-setting; Swades focused on the importance of taking initiative; and Stand and Deliver's message was that, with effort, anything is possible.

By the end of the camp, students whose English fluency and confidence levels were low, were able to debate controversial topics in English such as Capital Punishment vs Life Imprisonment and Gandhi Ji vs.  Bhagat Singh. Every student also had the opportunity to use computers in a practical manner for at least two hours a day. The highlight of the computer class was definitely when the students created their own email addresses. The level of comfort with which students now use the mouse or browse the internet is quite an achievement.

With the skills gained in the summer camp, these students have certainly taken steps in the right direction to find good jobs and ensure themselves successful futures!

Bagar Cricket Camp for Girls

Girls Summer Camp

The Cricket Camp for Girls was held in Bagar during school vacation, ending on June 20th, 2008. Every morning from 8:00 to 11:00 am a group of girls practiced cricket with seasoned coaches, experienced players, and even a former female Rajasthan cricket team member by their side. Besides cricket, the girls also participated in other activities including baseball and tennis.

This camp helped to build teamwork, leaderships skills, and laid the foundation for future success in athletics-- a field where women rarely have opportunities in this region. Athletics not only helps these young women improve their physical strength but it enhances mental and emotional stability as well. The camp is expected to happen again next summer in the same location across from the Sanskrit College in Bagar.
